A new Hall of Fame Interview & Giveaway started today, so get your name in for a chance to win a gorgeous, pair of earrings from The Empress Jewel! Have a great week!

Hall of Fame {The Empress Jewel}

Welcome back everybody. Thanks for joining me again this week to learn about another Etsy artist.

Meet Jenn, the creative gal behind The Empress Jewel. With a passion for creating beautiful and unique jewelry, your sure to find something to love in her shop, which is overflowing with works of art in a range of different styles.

Read on to discover what inspires her, her day job, the unique way her shop name came about, and who is Spazz and Feist.

What inspires you?
Everything inspires me. I will be listening to music, watching a movie, reading a magazine, or going for a hike and suddenly think of a new design. I think this random creativity leads to my eclectic mix of jewelry that suits every age and style.

Where do you call home? Are you from there originally?
Growing up I moved around a lot and have lived in every region of the United States. Out of all the places I've landed, I am now proud to call Portland, Oregon home.
Name something unique to where you live.
The culture and the way of life. People here are open minded, environmentally conscious, and support independently owned businesses with a passion.

Share an interesting fact about yourself.
I have a genetic disorder called Hemochromatosis. Hemochromatosis (HHC) is the leading cause of iron overload disease. People with Hemochromatosis absorb extra amounts of iron from their daily diet. Over time, these excesses build up in major organs such as the heart, liver, pancreas, joints and pituitary gland. If the extra iron is not removed, these organs can become diseased. Untreated Hemochromatosis can be fatal. I like to tell people about it because it is one of the most common genetic diseases but not well known yet. If you would like more information visit www.hemochromatosis.org.

If you had to describe yourself in a word, what would that word be?
Compassionate
What made you decide to open up shop?
I began making jewelry as a hobby. Then friends and family would see my creations and ask if I could make something for them. Pretty soon I was making custom pieces and having jewelry parties. I started with my own website complete with shopping cart, but when I began studying for my Veterinary Technician license it took up too much time. I found Etsy and loved their mission to promote handmade products so I set up shop. I still have my own website but now it is more of a gallery.

How did you come up with your shop name? Any special significance?
I went through a weird phase in high school when I was interested in tarot cards. One of my favorite cards, and the only one I remember, is the Empress. I loved the meaning behind the card which includes the power of creation.

Name your favorite thing about selling handmade.
The idea that the individual artist puts their heart and soul into their craft resulting in something truly unique. The community the supports each other instead of large-scale manufacturers.

Do you have a day job or sell on Etsy full-time?
I have a full time job as a Licensed Veterinary Technician at a diagnostic imaging company. My job is to anesthetize and monitor animals (dogs & cats) for MRI and CT. I also assist the radiologists with ultrasounds and care for cats undergoing our Radioiodine Therapy.
Give us a glimpse into what a typical day in your life looks like.
If it is one of the four days I work, then I get up around 6:30am, get ready, feed my cats, and get to work around 8am. Usually I leave work around 6pm unless there is an emergency or it has been a really busy day then it could be later. Because of the long hours on these days I don't typically make jewelry but I fill orders, answer conversations, and hopefully post some new items. On my days off I'll make new pieces and take pictures while watching movies.

Share with us a favorite Etsy purchase or shop.
I order some of my beads from Ollie & Jo, a fellow Portland, Oregon resident. They sell beautiful gemstones at a reasonable price and I like supporting local independent businesses.

List a few of your most favorite pastimes.
Time spent with my family traveling, watching movies, and camping/hiking.

Read any good books lately?
I enjoy reading non-fiction, especially Buddhist philosophy. The last book I read was The Wisdom of No Escape by Pema Chandron.
What is your most prized possession?
Being an animal lover I would say my kitties Spazz & Feist. Spazz is my 6 year old gray/white domestic shorthair who was found outside someone's apartment complex. He brought him to the first veterinary hospital I at and was and was going to be taken to the humane society but I took him home instead. Despite his name he actually has a very chill personality and just wants to be loved on. Feist is my 1 year old tabby domestic long hair who I found at a veterinary hospital I was at doing a mobile ultrasound. She is much more like her name, running around, constantly talking to me and oddly enough drools when she gets the attention she seeks.
What are three of your favorite foods?
I love food!!! This is by far the most difficult question...sushi is definitely number one. Give me some fresh sake or unagi and I am a very happy girl. I enjoy a big bleu cheese burger with fries and a local microbrew (IPA). And lastly, ice cream...any kind but preferably Ben & Jerry's Crème Brûlée.

What would you like to learn to do?
I am currently working with stained glass right now. The next creative outlet I would like to learn is lampwork beading or fused glass.

What are you listening to right now?
Kings of Leon - Only By The Night
Name one place you must visit in your lifetime and why.
Australia. I want to experience the culture and explore the land, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Thanks for sharing with us Jenn! It was so nice getting to know you better.

Jenn's shop is filled with so many lovely things! Stop by her shop and website to see more.

Nicole, it was an honor to have you here at The Sunshine Studio! Your work is beautiful.

A new Hall of Fame Interview & Giveaway started today, so get your name in for a chance to win a gorgeous, hand knit neckwarmer from Etsy shop Phydeaux! Have a great week!

Hall of Fame {Phydeaux}

Happy Monday everyone! If the weather where you are is anything like it is here, reading this interview and seeing the beautiful hand knits will make you feel all warm and fuzzy! So grab a cup of coffee and make yourself at home.

Meet Brenda, the creative designer behind Etsy shop Phydeaux, which is brimming with hand knit scarves and accessories.

Read on to discover what inspires her, how the name Phydeaux came about, and sneak a peek at a day in her life. I just don't know how she does it all - what an inspiration!

What inspires you?
I live in such a beautiful area, right where the infamous Silicon Valley (big city, high tech!) meets the woods of the Santa Cruz Mountains. I’m continually re-energized, revived and inspired by the beauty right outside my windows and my back yard filled with squirrels, birds, the occasional raccoon, possum, and assorted other critters.

I’m also inspired by the elegant fashion from the 30’s and 40’s (my favorite period for fashion!), as well as historical fashion and costumes. A beautifully handcrafted pearl-encrusted neck ruffle from Elizabethan times will feed my creative soul for weeks!

I often have images in my head for new designs for weeks, even months, before I have the time and resources to sit down and figure out how to make them come to life. Those images can be inspired by any of the above, along with the wonderful yarns and fibers that I collect (or that I’m compelled to go buy), color, texture, the latest edition of Vogue, etc.

Where do you call home? Are you from there originally?
I live in Saratoga, which is south of the San Francisco Bay (“South Bay Area”), at the southwestern-most edge of the Silicon Valley. Saratoga nestles right up against the Santa Cruz Mountains. There are mountain lion warning signs just a couple of blocks up the hill from me! And I listen to coyotes at night. I moved to the Bay Area 21 years ago this month, which is ironic because I swore I’d never live here. I grew up in the High Desert of the Sierra Nevadas (now those are mountains!), followed by California’s Central Valley (Sacramento). Since I lived in Los Angeles/southern California up until kindergarten, I suppose I’ll need to live in Northern California next!
Name something unique to where you live.
I live next door to a house that was once a bar and establishment for working girls back in the 1800’s, serving the little community’s sawmill workers. I actually lived in that house for a number of years and it is full of history and memories – maybe even a ghost or two!

Share an interesting fact about yourself.
I was born ambidextrous (able to use both hands with equal skill), but my teachers forced me to be right handed in grade school. Interestingly, I have a permanently bent/slightly deformed ring finger on my right hand, from the way I’ve held my writing utensils (not the same as most people!).

If you had to describe yourself in a word, what would that word be?
Creative.
What made you decide to open up shop?
I learned about Etsy a full year or more before I considered opening shop. I wish I remembered how I learned about it – one of my friends turned me on to it, but I just don’t remember which! I was elated that I’d found such a wonderful source of handmade, artisanal jewelry (I’m an earring junky). I occasionally would think how grand it would be to sell my own jewelry or illustrations or paintings or (fill in the blank) on Etsy, but I was swamped between work and school.

During Christmas 2007, I was knitting up a scarf for a Christmas gift, shopping for earrings at Etsy (again…) and saw that folks were also selling hand knits. I suddenly thought, “I can do this.” I spent the next week or two deciding between knits and jewelry. Knits won because (a) I had nowhere the jewelry skills that I saw on Etsy (I’m not a metal worker or caster), (b) I thought that the supply inventory for knits would be less expensive (Ha! You should see my stash!), and (c) my cats were still young enough that beads were a problem (I haven’t seriously made jewelry since adopting my two kitties, both of whom are obsessed by shiny beads and findings). I opened shop a few weeks later!

How did you come up with your shop name? Any special significance?
Oh yes! Phydeaux (pronounced “fido”) was one of my beloved kitties’ names. Little Phydeaux was abandoned at a truck stop in Montana, during the Winter, found by my Dad and brother during a trip. My brother, bless him, kept that kitten curled up in his jacket all the way home, feeding it drops of milk. I latched on to Phydeaux on seeing him (I think he was just a week old) and raised him by bottle. Such a sweet, sweet little kitty. He unfortunately met an untimely end, breaking my heart, but since that time, I’ve always used “Phydeaux” as my creative moniker.

Who taught you to knit?
I vaguely remember my paternal grandmother trying to teach me to knit when I was pretty young. What I remember more clearly is her teaching me to cast on. I’m sure I learned some knitting in home ec classes in Jr. High. I’m largely to entirely self taught.
Name your favorite thing about selling handmade.
The satisfaction and delight of knowing that something hatched from my head, my heart and my two hands is being enjoyed by someone on the other side of the world or country or town! I think my life would have been very different had the internet and Etsy been around when I was much younger.

Do you have a day job or sell on Etsy full-time?
I have a fulltime day job, managing finance and administration at a medical school. I get to use business education and experience every day in my business! I also get to use it for the weekly column I write for papernstitch, craft venture (every Monday morning – stop by!).

Give us a little glimpse into what a typical day in your life looks like.
I’m currently on a leave from my day job, so I’ll give you a typical day as of recent: wake up between 8-9 am (no alarm clock, yay!), feed kitties/get dressed/fire up computer, answer convoes and fill pattern orders from previous night, check stats, renew a few items, eat breakfast while reading favorite blogs and sites, work on orders or marketing efforts until early afternoon, post office if needed along with appointments and errands through mid afternoon, new product photos and listings, work on orders and/or marketing to 4pm, go for a nice energizing and healthy walk, make and enjoy dinner, finish new listings, package new orders since the previous day (or consignment or wholesale orders), knit and write/schedule blog posts while watching TV or movies, bed anywhere between 11:30pm and 1am.
Share with us a favorite Etsy purchase or shop.
Oh man, it’s nearly impossible to pick just one shop or purchase – I’m an avid Etsy shopper! But the one shop I come back to time and time again is Savor Soap – fantastic whipped soaps and body butters!

List a few of your most favorite pastimes.
In addition to knitting … I love to cook (hope to write a cookbook one day!) and bake! I also enjoy walking, gardening, reading (haven’t done that in too long, though). Love playing videogames! I think I have every Legend of Zelda game now. Maybe I’m missing one or two …

Read any good books lately?
I never have time to read anymore, which is heartbreaking to me; instead, I now listen to audiobooks. I’m currently listening to John Adams by David McCullough: brilliant! Prior to that, I listened to The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield, which was pure genius.

What is your most prized possession?
Not counting my two kitties, it has to be my beloved “Mom Dog.” (I can’t believe I’m saying this outloud!). Mom Dog is a stuffed pink dog that was given to me as a baby, and I still have! More than 40 years later! I keep her stored away now to keep her from crumbling to ashes; suffice to say that she is a very very well loved and more bald than plush member of my little family.
What are three of your favorite foods?
Even though I love healthy, holistic, delicious foods, pizza has to always be on a top three list. What would we do without pizza!? Especially Hawaiian (Canadian bacon and pineapple)! I love Vietnamese food, particularly spring rolls or shaken beef – I could eat both three times a day for a month. Ooo, and chocolate! Dark chocolate!

What would you like to learn to do?
I’ve always wanted to learn to make stained glass. One of these days! I’m learning to spin my own yarn, but would also love (and plan) to learn to dye my own yarn.

What are you listening to right now?
The orchestra of birds in my back yard and gentle snoring by two conked out kitties. Better than any music on the planet.
Name one place you must visit in your lifetime and why.
Another tough one – so many places! I so want to go to France or Scotland or Ireland or Egypt. But I think the one place I’d regret not going is Alaska – or anyplace up north so that I can see the Northern Lights for myself. I’m absolutely fascinated by them!

Hall of Fame {Hot Toffee}

Welcome! I'm back from this year's Craft Attack outdoor marketplace (pictures coming soon), and my shop will be re-opened later today or tomorrow morning. Thanks for all the well wishes and support for a successful show.

Some amazing artists are lined up for the coming weeks that you're sure to enjoy reading about.
Today, meet Nicole, the talented Australian behind Etsy shop Hot Toffee.

Nicole's work is "Inspired by all things sweet, Japanese art & design and strongly influenced by the beautiful beaches of Australia." Each piece she creates is a unique piece of art - art you can wear!

Read on to learn more about her, why the area she lives in is called 'the salad bowl', and just where the name hot toffee came from.

What inspires you?

Nature, the beach in the afternoon, colours, Japanese design, light…

Where do you call home? Are you from there originally?
We have lived in a small country town called Laidley since we bought a house 2 years ago. I was born in Sydney but grew up on the north east coast of New South Wales near gorgeous Byron Bay.

Name something unique to where you live.
This area has many names; one of them is ‘the salad bowl’ as there are so many farms. We are lucky to buy the freshest veggies straight from our local farmers.

Share an interesting fact about yourself.
My left eye is 2 colours; it’s green with a brown section that covers about 1/3 of it.

If you had to describe yourself in a word, what would that word be?
indecisive
What made you decide to open up shop?
At the time I had a stall at the local market each Saturday and thought an online presence would compliment that nicely and keep me busy during the week.

How did you come up with your shop name? Any special significance?
A lot of the first fused glass pieces I made looked a lot like toffee and because I fire my glass up to 800 degrees (Celsius) ‘hot toffee’ seemed perfect.

Name your favorite thing about selling handmade.
To be honest, it’s the people I’ve met. The customers who have embraced me and the other creative souls I’ve met along the way both online and offline. I’m lucky to be part of the brisStyle etsy street team which is an amazing group of people. Also, being surrounded by the handmade community has made birthday and Christmas shopping a lot more fun!

Do you have a day job or sell on Etsy full-time?
For 3 years hot toffee was my full-time job. That included etsy, wholesale and selling at local design focused markets. Early this year I decided I needed to work out of my home based studio and feel like I was connected to the off-line world and I was lucky enough to pick up 2 days teaching English to International students in order to prepare them to join mainstream high schools. I now juggle hot toffee and teaching which is challenging but so rewarding on many different levels.
Give us a little glimpse into what a typical day in your life looks like.
Wake up between 6am – 7am to the barking of our dog Pochi.
Enjoy a fresh coffee & (gluten free) toast
Check my email and read my favourite blogs.
Make a ‘to do’ list so that I can get through the day without too much procrastination.
Cut & fire glass.
Pack orders & take them to the post office. Our town is very small so it doesn’t take long to finish my chores which means there is always time to have a peek in the opp shops*.
Then it’s back home for lunch and an afternoon of firing glass, printing and cutting swing tags and replying to emails. If new items need to be photographed for my etsy shop I do that around 3 pm. I try to switch the computer off and finish ticking things off my ‘to do’ list by 6 pm.
The evening is spent cooking, talking, eating, watching TV or listening to music, flicking through my favourite magazines and books for inspiration.

*opp shops = opportunity shops or thrift stores

Share with us a favorite Etsy purchase or shop.
I’m wearing my favourite etsy purchase in the photo. I bought them from windowsill.

List a few of your most favorite pastimes.
Drinking & eating with my partner; Ryo, going to the movies by myself, opp shopping with my Mum, visiting garage sales and markets on the weekend, walking on the beach with my Dad and I LOVE painting (it's so therapeutic!)
Read any good books lately?
I always seem to have a few books on my bedside table, at present they are:
Lessons of a Lipstick Queen by Poppy King, Richard Branson – the autobiography, Geisha by Liza Dalby

What is your most prized possession?
A collection of paper boats made with my grandfather from all his old (losing) horse betting tickets. I have a basket of these in my wooden chest which holds all my sentimental belongings.

What are three of your favorite foods?
I was diagnosed with Coeliac Disease 2 years ago which means I can’t eat anything containing Gluten which is quite a lot! With the support of Ryo and a lot of experimenting we have discovered some new favourites:
Thai style chicken balls, gourmet crepes & Chicken & pumpkin curry (with pappadams of course!)
What would you like to learn to do?
I have always wanted to learn graphic design

What are you listening to right now?
my local radio station

Name one place you must visit in your lifetime and why.
Hamilton in Scotland as this is where my grandfather was born. He migrated to Australia when he was 7 years old. There is a big part of me that really needs to see where he came from.

Hi there! Isn't this fall weather lovely? My favorite time of year is here!

This Saturday, I will be participating in a craft show in Charlotte, NC. If you're in the area, I encourage you to stop by! I still have a lot of preparation to do, so it's off to work! More info in the sidebar...

For this reason, my shop will be closed starting tomorrow, and will re-open upon my return from the show (probably Monday). I have a lot of one-of-a-kind pieces in there, so get them while you still can!

Also on Monday, another Etsian has been inducted into the Hall of Fame, so stop back by to read the interview and enter the contest.

Here's a couple giveaways I'd like to share with you this week:
